Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling?

When your AC runs but the air is not cold, it almost always comes down to one of a handful of Florida-specific problems. Here are the seven we see most in Orlando homes.

1. A dirty or clogged air filter

The most common and most overlooked cause. In Orlando humidity, filters clog in 30 to 45 days. A choked filter restricts airflow and can freeze your coil solid. Check it first. If it is gray and packed, replace it.

2. A frozen evaporator coil

Ironically common in Florida heat. Restricted airflow or low refrigerant drops the coil below freezing and ice builds up. If you see ice on the lines, shut the system off and let it thaw, then call us.

3. A failed capacitor

The number one Florida AC failure. The capacitor starts your compressor and fan. When it dies in a heatwave, the unit runs but does not cool. This is a same-day fix.

4. Low refrigerant from a leak

If refrigerant is low, there is a leak. Topping it off without fixing the leak is throwing money away. We find the leak and fix it properly.

5. A clogged condensate drain line

Orlando humidity grows algae in drain lines fast. A clog can trigger a safety switch that shuts cooling down entirely.

6. A dirty outdoor condenser coil

Grass, dust, and pollen coat the outdoor unit and trap heat, so it cannot dump heat outside. Cooling drops off, especially in the afternoon.

7. A failing compressor

The expensive one. If the compressor is going, you will often hear it or notice it tripping the breaker. This is where we give you an honest repair-vs-replace answer.

The fast checks you can do: replace the filter, make sure all vents are open, check that the outdoor unit is clear, and look for ice on the lines. If none of that fixes it, it is time for a pro.
